Converting from TIFF: a container, not a format, and what that means for conversion

Why two .tif files can be very different things, and which destination fits depending on where yours came from

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) appeared in 1986 to bring order to the scanners of the day, each with its own proprietary format. The solution was a tag-based design: the file uses metadata to describe how its own data is stored, rather than imposing a single way of doing it.
That design win is also its great practical complication. TIFF is not a format, it is a container: two files with a .tif extension can be compressed with different algorithms, have different colour depths, use different colour spaces and hold a different number of pages. It is why one program opens a TIFF happily and another rejects it.

CMYK: the detail that throws the colours off

TIFFs that come from a print shop or a prepress workflow are usually in CMYK, the four-ink colour space, not RGB. Screens work in RGB, so converting means translating between two different ways of describing colour.
That translation is not exact: there are printable colours a screen cannot show, and the other way round. Typically heavily saturated tones dull slightly when moved to RGB. It is not a conversion error; the two spaces simply do not cover the same range.

Which format should you move your TIFF to?

To JPG — sharing and sending

The practical option when the TIFF is too heavy to attach or upload. The size reduction is enormous, at the cost of lossy compression.

To PNG — losing nothing

Keeps the exact pixels and transparency if there was any. A good choice for scanned documents, text or graphics where sharpness matters.

To WebP — publishing on the web

Shrinks much further than PNG while keeping quality and transparency. The natural destination if the image is headed for a page.

To BMP — legacy software

Only if something explicitly requires it. You lose every TIFF advantage and the file will be enormous.

Why your TIFF is so heavy

TIFF is used where the priority is preserving information, not saving space: document archiving, prepress, professional photography, and scientific and medical imaging. A high-resolution scan at 16 bits per channel with lossless compression takes what it takes precisely because nothing was discarded along the way.
That is also the reason to keep the original TIFF after converting: it is your master copy. The converted files are working copies for sending, publishing or sharing.

Because it is built to preserve information, not to save space. It usually combines high resolution, 16 bits per channel and lossless compression — or none at all. That is normal in professional scanning, prepress and archiving.

Still image formats store only one image, so you get the first page. If you need to keep the whole document, convert to PDF rather than to an image.

Almost certainly because the TIFF was in CMYK, the print colour space. Screens use RGB and the translation between the two is not exact: the most saturated tones usually dull a little. It is inherent to the change of colour space.

No, as long as your TIFF was 8 bits per channel. Both are lossless formats and the pixels are preserved exactly. If the TIFF was 16-bit, depth will be reduced to 8, which is what PNG handles in practice.

Not with this tool: here the image format is converted, not its content. Extracting the text requires optical character recognition (OCR), which is a different process.
