Converting from JPG: what survives, what does not, and where to go next

How JPEG lossy compression works and what to expect when you convert it to PNG, WebP, TIFF or other formats

JPEG is a 1992 standard (ISO/IEC 10918-1) and still the most widespread photographic format in the world: it is what virtually every camera, every phone and every screenshot shared over messaging produces. Its great strength is also its great limitation — JPEG compresses with loss, permanently discarding image information in order to reach small file sizes.
That matters before you convert anything, because it defines what you can expect from the result. When you convert a JPG to another format, you are not starting from the original image: you are starting from whatever survived the JPEG encoder. No destination format can bring back what was thrown away.

How does JPEG actually compress?

The encoder splits the image into 8×8 pixel blocks and applies a discrete cosine transform (DCT) to each one, turning pixels into frequency coefficients. Low frequencies describe smooth areas; high frequencies describe fine detail and edges. A quantization table then divides those coefficients and rounds them — and that rounding is where information is lost irreversibly. The more aggressive the quantization, the smaller the file and the greater the damage.
On top of that comes chroma subsampling. Human vision resolves changes in brightness far better than changes in colour, so most encoders store luminance at full resolution but colour at half resolution on each axis (4:2:0 mode). That is why saturated reds against a light background often look smeared in a JPG, and why red or blue text on white degrades so badly.

Typical JPEG artefacts, and why converting does not remove them

  • Blocking: the 8×8 grid becomes visible in skies, gradients and flat colour areas. It shows up when quantization wipes out nearly all high frequencies in a block.
  • Ringing or "mosquito noise": halos and speckles around sharp edges — text, logos, subtitles. It is the Gibbs effect of rebuilding a hard edge from too few frequencies.
  • Colour bleeding: colour spills past its outline because of 4:2:0 subsampling. Very visible on lettering and flat illustration.
  • Gradient banding: smooth transitions turn into steps because neighbouring coefficients rounded to the same value.
  • Generation loss: every time a JPG is opened, edited and saved as JPG again, it is quantized again. The damage accumulates even at high quality settings.
All of those artefacts are already part of the file's pixels. On conversion, the destination format treats them as legitimate image content: a PNG will store your JPEG blocking with perfect fidelity, not remove it.

JPG and JPEG are the same thing

There is no technical difference between a .jpg file and a .jpeg one. The three-letter extension is a leftover from MS-DOS, which only allowed 8.3-style filenames. The same goes for .jfif, .jpe, .pjpeg and .pjp: all are the same JPEG stream under a different label. This tool accepts any of them interchangeably.
There is a real difference between baseline and progressive JPEG. Baseline paints from top to bottom; progressive appears blurry first and sharpens as it loads. Both hold the same image and both convert identically — progressive tends to be slightly smaller.

EXIF metadata: what your JPG carries that you cannot see

A JPG from a phone or camera holds more than pixels. Its EXIF header carries the make and model of the device, the exact date and time, the shooting parameters and, very often, the GPS coordinates of where the photo was taken. It is information almost nobody looks at, and that gets shared unintentionally whenever the image is uploaded somewhere.
One more EXIF field causes trouble on conversion: the orientation tag. Many cameras store the photo exactly as it came off the sensor and note separately "rotate this 90°". Formats that ignore that field display the image on its side. If your conversion comes out rotated, that is why — the image itself is not broken.

No. PNG is lossless, which means it stores <em>exactly</em> the pixels you hand it — including the blocking and halos left behind by JPEG compression. What you gain is that nothing further is lost from that point on, not the recovery of what was already lost.

That is expected. JPEG reaches those sizes precisely by throwing information away; PNG compresses without discarding anything. On top of that, PNG is tuned for flat colour areas, while a photograph has noise and texture in almost every pixel — the worst case for its algorithm. A PNG several times bigger than the source JPG is normal.

In lossy mode, yes: a second quantization is applied to an already quantized image. In practice, at a high quality setting the result is usually visually indistinguishable and considerably lighter. If you want no additional loss at all, use those formats' lossless mode or convert to PNG.

Not automatically. JPEG has no alpha channel, so there is no transparency information in your file to recover: what looks like a "white background" is genuinely white pixels. The PNG will support transparency, but cutting the background out is a separate editing step.

It depends on the destination format — not all of them have anywhere to put it, so in many conversions the camera, date and GPS data simply does not carry over to the new file. If you need it kept, check the result before deleting your original.
