Converting from GIF: 256 colours, animation, and what happens on the way out
Why a GIF looks speckled, what happens to the frames when you convert, and which destination suits each case
GIF dates from 1987 and is still alive almost forty years later, which is more than nearly any other computing format can claim. Its definitive version, 89a from 1989, added the two things that made it indestructible: animation and transparency. A file that played by itself, on a loop, with no plugins was for decades something no other image format offered.
Everything else about GIF is dated, and that is exactly what matters when converting it.
The limitation that defines it: 256 colours
A GIF does not store colours directly. It stores a palette of at most 256 entries and, for each pixel, the number of the entry it uses. When the original image had millions of colours — a photo, a gradient, a video — it has to be reduced into those 256 slots, and that is where most of the information is lost.
To disguise it, encoders apply dithering: they interleave pixels of two palette colours so the eye perceives a third in between. That is the source of the characteristic speckled pattern or graininess you see in GIFs made from photographs. That noise lives in the file's pixels, so converting to a format with millions of colours does not remove it — it just stores it more faithfully.
ℹ️ GIF's compression (LZW) is lossless — the loss happens earlier, when the palette is reduced. That is why a GIF of a flat graphic with few colours looks perfect while a GIF of a photo looks bad: it is not the compression's fault, it is the palette.
Animation: what happens when converting to a still image
An animated GIF is a sequence of frames, each with its own delay, plus an instruction for how many times to repeat. Converting it to JPG, PNG, BMP or any other still image format means only one frame survives, usually the first. That is not a conversion failure: the destination format has nowhere to put the rest.
If you need to keep the motion, the destination has to support it: animated WebP, animated AVIF, or straight to video. And if your goal is to shrink a heavy GIF, converting it to video is by far the most effective move: a video codec exploits the similarity between consecutive frames, something GIF does not do at all.
Binary transparency: no in-between
GIF lets you mark a single palette entry as transparent. A pixel is either opaque or invisible; the intermediate levels PNG, WebP and AVIF offer do not exist. That is why GIFs with a transparent background show that recognisable jagged edge, often with a halo in whatever colour the image was originally composited against.
Converting to PNG or WebP does not improve that edge: the hard pixels are already decided in the file. What you gain is the ability to edit with real transparency from then on.

💡 Converting a GIF to PNG does not improve image quality, but it is the right move if you are going to edit it: you leave behind the 256-colour palette and binary transparency, so from then on you work without those constraints.
