Compressing images: cutting the weight without changing format

What compressing an image actually does, how it differs from resizing, and how far it is worth pushing

Compressing an image means reducing its size on disk while keeping the same format and the same dimensions. That is different from converting it โ€” which changes the format โ€” and different from resizing it โ€” which changes the pixel count. All three shrink the file, but by different routes and with different consequences.

What compression actually does

In a lossy format such as JPEG or WebP, compressing means adjusting how much fine detail is discarded. The encoder analyses the image region by region and decides which variations are subtle enough that the eye will not miss them. Lowering quality widens that margin: more information is thrown out and the file shrinks.
The relationship is not linear, and that is the most useful practical fact: the first steps down in quality cut the weight enormously with no visible difference, while the last ones barely reduce anything and degrade visibly instead. The sweet spot is at the top of the scale, not at the extreme.

Generation loss: the most expensive mistake

Every time a lossy image is compressed, information is discarded. Take the result and compress it again and the new loss is applied to an already degraded image โ€” and the damage accumulates. Repeated a few times, the result fills with blocking and halos even if every individual step used a "high" quality setting.
The practical rule: always compress from the original, never from an already compressed version. If you need to try several levels, go back to the source file each time rather than chaining compressions.

Which images compress best

  • Photographs with smooth areas โ€” skies, portraits, landscapes โ€” compress extraordinarily well: there is plenty of redundant information to discard unnoticed.
  • Images with heavy grain or fine texture โ€” foliage, sand, high-ISO shots with sensor noise โ€” resist: almost every pixel differs from its neighbour and there is little headroom.
  • Screenshots, text and flat graphics react badly to lossy compression: sharp edges generate very visible halos. A lossless format suits these far better.
  • Already compressed images have little additional headroom, and forcing it only produces generation loss.

Resizing changes the image's pixel count; compressing keeps the dimensions and reduces the internal detail that gets stored. If your image is much larger than it will ever be displayed, resizing saves more with no appreciable loss.

At high quality settings, on an ordinary photograph it is practically imperceptible. Degradation becomes visible when you go much lower: blocking appears in flat areas and halos around sharp edges.
