Converting from AVIF: what it stores that others cannot, and what gets lost on the way out

A format built on the AV1 video codec: 10-bit, HDR and superior compression, with the compatibility problems that brings

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is the newest of the general-purpose image formats. Its specification was published in 2019 and the founding idea is simple: take the AV1 video codec and store a single frame with it. Video codecs have decades of optimisation behind them in squeezing pixels, so applying that machinery to a still image produces files noticeably smaller than JPEG or WebP at comparable quality.
The price of that efficiency is twofold. Encoding is considerably slower than in any classic format, and support outside the browser remains patchy: it is common for an AVIF downloaded from a website to refuse to open in a desktop editor, fail to attach to a form, or be rejected by an upload platform.

What AVIF can store that most formats cannot

  • 10 and 12 bits per channel. Against JPEG's 8 bits, that gives far more levels per channel and removes the visible banding in skies and soft gradients.
  • HDR and wide colour gamuts. AVIF can carry the transfer curves high dynamic range displays use, and colour spaces wider than sRGB.
  • A full alpha channel, with midtone transparency just like PNG or WebP.
  • Configurable chroma subsampling (4:2:0, 4:2:2 or 4:4:4), including the unsubsampled mode that keeps colour at full resolution.
  • Film grain synthesis: grain is described with parameters rather than stored pixel by pixel, which saves a great deal of space on analogue photography and cinema stills.

AVIF versus WebP: why both exist

They belong to the same conceptual family — both descend from a video codec — but to different generations. WebP derives from VP8, from 2008; AVIF derives from AV1, considerably later and far more sophisticated. Broadly speaking AVIF compresses better, especially at low quality settings, where WebP starts showing artefacts of its own while AVIF still holds detail.
In exchange, WebP wins on two things that matter day to day: it encodes much faster, and its support, inside and outside the browser, is broader simply from having been around longer. That is why many sites serve both and let the browser choose.

Because support outside browsers is still uneven. Modern browsers display it without trouble, but many desktop editors, system viewers and upload platforms do not handle it yet. Converting to JPG or PNG is the direct route.

At a high quality setting, most photos come out visually very close, though the file will weigh considerably more. Where it does show is on images with broad gradients: going from 10 bits to 8 can introduce banding that was not in the AVIF.

Yes. Both formats handle an alpha channel with midtones, so soft edges survive. It is the recommended conversion if your image has a transparent background.

It is mapped to standard dynamic range, because the usual destination formats cannot represent HDR. Very bright highlights are compressed toward white and the result can look somewhat flatter than the original did on a compatible display.

On compression efficiency, generally yes, particularly at low quality settings. On encoding speed and breadth of support, WebP is still ahead. Which suits you depends on whether your priority is file size or compatibility.

AVIF supports frame sequences, but converting to a still image format keeps only one of them. To retain motion you need a destination that supports animation, such as GIF.
